AI search engines are already sending real traffic to real businesses. ChatGPT answers over 1 billion queries per day. Perplexity handles tens of millions. Google's AI Overviews appear on a growing percentage of searches. When users ask these systems about your industry, does your brand come up?
Most brands have no idea. Here's a simple method to audit your AI visibility across the three major platforms — and what to do if you're invisible.
The 3-Platform Audit Method
Step 1: Query ChatGPT
Open ChatGPT (free tier works) and ask these three types of questions:
- Brand-specific: "What do you know about [your brand]?" — Tests basic awareness
- Category: "What are the best [your product category] for [your target audience]?" — Tests if you're recommended in your category
- Comparison: "[your brand] vs [competitor] — which is better?" — Tests competitive positioning
Record exactly what ChatGPT says. Does it mention you? How accurately? Does it cite your website? What sentiment does it express?
Step 2: Query Perplexity
Perplexity is different — it searches the web in real-time and cites specific sources. Ask the same three questions and note:
- Does it find your website as a source?
- Which pages does it cite?
- Are the citations accurate and up-to-date?
- Does it mention competitors instead of you?
Perplexity is particularly important because it shows its sources — you can see exactly where it found information about (or not about) your brand.
Step 3: Check Google AI Overviews
Search for your target keywords on Google and look for AI Overviews (the generated summary at the top). Note:
- Does the overview mention your brand?
- Does it cite your content?
- What competitors does it mention?
- What information does it include about your category?
Scoring Your Visibility
For each platform, rate your visibility:
- Visible + accurate: Brand mentioned correctly with website cited (best case)
- Visible + inaccurate: Brand mentioned but with wrong information (fixable)
- Invisible: Not mentioned at all (common for most brands)
- Competitor-focused: Competitors recommended instead of you (urgent)
What to Do If You're Invisible
Add Structured Data
JSON-LD schema on your website explicitly tells AI crawlers what you are, what you do, and what you offer. Organization, Product, FAQ, and Article schemas are the most impactful. Without structured data, AI systems have to infer your identity from unstructured text — and they often get it wrong or skip you entirely.
Create Comprehensive, Citation-Worthy Content
AI systems prefer citing content that's thorough, factual, and well-organized. Write detailed guides, original research, and comprehensive comparisons. State facts clearly. Cite your sources. Make it easy for the AI to extract specific answers.
Build FAQ Pages
FAQ pages directly match how people ask AI questions. Create detailed FAQ sections covering your product, industry, and common customer questions. Use FAQPage schema so AI crawlers can easily parse them.
Get Mentioned on Authoritative Sites
AI systems cross-reference multiple sources. If industry publications, review sites, or other authoritative sources mention your brand, AI systems are more likely to include you in their answers. Guest posts, interviews, and being quoted in articles all help.
Optimize Your robots.txt
Make sure AI crawlers can access your site. Many websites accidentally block GPTBot, PerplexityBot, and other AI crawlers. Add explicit Allow rules in your robots.txt.
How Often to Check
AI models update their training data periodically, and real-time search engines like Perplexity index constantly. Check your visibility monthly. Track changes over time — if you implement the fixes above, you should see improvement within 4-8 weeks.
